Smithereen Productions announces auditions for the play Spike Heels by Theresa Rebeck.

Spike Heels is a two act play about Andrew, struggling writer and college professor, who takes in working-class Georgie  as  his  “student”  of  the  proper  ways  of  modern  middle-class society while simultaneously falling in love with  her.  Andrew’s  friend  Edward,  a  hot-shot lawyer who took Georgie on as a secretary as a favor to Andrew, falls for her as well but in a more…aggressively sexual way, ensnaring himself and Georgie in an incident of harassment and power play in the workplace. This untraditional love triangle makes room for a fourth with the entrance  of  Lydia,  Edward’s  ex  and  Andrew’s  fiancée,  and  thus  Georgie’s…foe…or  maybe  her  ally?  Lines  are   blurred in this intense dark comedy full of fast-paced dialogue rife with  “stinging  one  liners”  (N.Y.  Daily  News)  and   “tart  wit”  (Time).  In  the  playwright’s words,  this  is  a  retelling  of  “the  Pygmalion  story  with  contemporary,  comic   and sinister spin,”  exploring  the  complicated  confusion of modern-day relationships and challenging the American sexual status-quo.

CHARACTERS

GEORGIE- Born on the “wrong” side of the tracks, she is the only one from her family to move to the city and acquire a job with which to support herself and separate herself from her roots. She is finding quickly that maybe the American Dream is not all it’s cut out to be, and sometimes being polite still only has as much pull as being seductive. Sassy and witty, hot-tempered and on a short fuse, she is also sincerely trying to educate herself and become a more well-read, well-rounded person– at the risk of becoming integrated into white-collar society, and working for and dealing with the “guys in suits.”

ANDREW- Sensitive, sweet, cautious, a thinker. Professor of political philosophy, a reader, a heartfelt elitist of sorts. He loves and respects women and sees them (he likes to believe) as the people they are, not the objects they are so often told they are. A misguided altruist at heart, and engaged to be married to Lydia, he struggles with his desire of sensual, hot-tempered Georgie.

EDWARD- Hot-shot criminal defense lawyer. Self-important, reactionary, and overtly aware of his own intelligence and success, but ultimately still human. Deeply flawed, but human. Enjoys provoking others for the sake of reaction, and argues–aggressively– until he wins like any good lawyer should.

LYDIA- Andrew’s fiancee, and thus The Scorned Woman to Georgie’s “other woman.” While we hear nothing but insults about her appearance and her character throughout Act I, Act II reveals a betrayed woman with a hardened exterior, but who underneath it all is kind-hearted and discovers the alliance with fellow women to outweigh the sexual alliance with men.

This is a reminder that the sign up for the Milwaukee Generals is this Saturday, January 26th from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon at the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre.  The good folks at the Rep are going out of their way to make sure as many local folks as possible can attend the Generals.  And while it says the sign-up process goes until noon, if you show up anywhere near that late don’t expect there to be any slots left.  When they used the old method of calling in for a slot, things were filled up within five minutes.  So get on it!

The Story

Paul and Corie Bratter are newlyweds in every sense of the word. He’s a straight-as-an-arrow lawyer and she’s a free spirit always looking for the latest kick. Their new apartment is her most recent find-too expensive with bad plumbing and in need of a paint job. After a six day honeymoon, they get a surprise visit from Corie’s loopy mother and decide to play matchmaker during a dinner with their neighbor-in-the-attic Velasco, where everything that can go wrong, does. Paul just doesn’t understand Corie, as she sees it. He’s too staid, too boring and she just wants him to be a little more spontaneous, running “barefoot in the park” would be a start…

LEAD ROLES

FOOL … the storyteller who plays various roles and

This character is the voice of horror in the play. The character must interpret Poe’s writing with grace and beauty as well as an underscore of evil intent.

PROSPERO II … 19, Prince of the Realm
An arrogant and violent monarch who is also an abandoned and unloved boy. He must be witty and briliant while showing that his major motivation is injury due to the neglect of his father.

DR.ALAN KILGORE … 49, former royal court physician and PROSPERO’S godfather
A gifted physician and the voice of reason in the play. He is devoted to his daughter and to the salvation of the realm from the plague. He is also the prince’s godfather.

SANGRID KILGORE … 17, KILGORE’S daughter and the last surviving member of his family
The only survivor of the Rave and the Red Death, she is innocent and kind, but she possesses a spine. She adored her father.

MILO RUDGE or RUDDY … 50’s, the old rummy who used to be a teacher
A former teacher, now a drunk to escape the pain of loss of his students. He befriends SANGRID.

MORTDALA … 22, PROSPERO’S Captain of the Guard and his personal bodyguard
A homicidal dominatrix who is the prince’s bodyguard.

SUPPORTING ROLES INCLUDE:

LALO, CAMELIA, EVA, BORIS, ADAM, LIEUTENANT/CLOWN, NORVAL, MRS. BUZZARD, THE BODY BRIGADE, KING VICTOR, QUENN ROSALYN, MAID, IMPS, RED DEATH CLOWN, PRINCE CLOWN, PEASANT CLOWN, DANCERS, ACROBATS, JUGGLERS, PUPPETEERS, FREDERICK, ANNABELLE, BILL WILSON, LENORE, TROUBADOUR, MONTRESOUR, FORTUNADO, BERENICE, EGAES, THE ARCHBISHOP, THE YOUNG PREIST, ARTISANS, SERVANTS, BUTLER, LADY MADELINE USHER, KNIGHTS, COURTIERS, POE CHARACTERS, TOWNSPEOPLE

Eloquent language and beautiful delivery is at the heart of this play. Auditions will be judged based on voice as well as interpretation. Deliver the scene; avoid “acting.”

THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH will run from September 28 until October 27. Friday and Saturday evenings, with two Sunday matinees and one Thursday Pay-What-You-Can night. The first read thru will be Saturday, June 30 and rehearsals will begin shortly after. During the month of July rehearsals will be Tuesday through Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons. They will pick up in August and by September we will be doing run-throughs. Carte Blanche Studios is working on a stipend for the lead roles.

Keeping the basic plot by Edgar Allan Poe, THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH takes place in a realm ruined by The Red Death, a rapaciously contagious plague that kills through porous hemorrhage. The population of Prince Prospero’s Dominion is dying so rapidly that most are fleeing the land. The teenage monarch, orphaned and embittered by the disease, lives in a castle where he is tyrant and oblivious to the suffering of his subjects.

Former royal peer Dr. Alan Kilgore and his daughter, Sangrid, have left their own blighted estate to try to convince Prospero, the doctor’s Godson, to save his people. The Prince refuses and decrees that his castle will be sealed and he’ll let the disease have its way until it disappears. When the disease takes her father, Sangrid is alone and wandering in a dangerous world where she meets an old drunk named Ruddy who befriends her. Sangrid is abducted by the Prince’s guards and dragged back to his castle. Ruddy is murdered as he tries to protect her. Finally Ruddy, or something that looks like him, appears in the castle during the gala Steampunk rave thrown by the Prince for his courtiers and changes everything into a horrific, ironic climax.

The text incorporates many literary links to Poe from various short stories including A CASK OF AMONTILLADO, THE TELL-TALE HEART, THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER, THE ASSIGNATION, and WILLIAM WILSON and poems like The City in the Sea, The Conqueror Worm, and The Haunted Palace.

Hope to see you at the audition!!!
