Resident Designer/Technical Director

Job Description

Employment:

The Resident Designer/Technical Director is a member of Sunset Playhouse’s full-time professional staff, and is directly responsible to the Artistic Director. Specific duties are supervised on a day-to-day basis by the Artistic Director. This is a salaried, full-time position with benefits and its status is “exempt” as it relates to overtime pay and the Fair Labor Standards Act.

General Responsibilities:

The Resident Designer/Technical Director is responsible for all technical aspects of all productions produced by Sunset Playhouse. This includes, but is not limited to, all production aspects for all Sunset productions, including set design and build, lighting design, and sound design; liaison for technical matters for rentals; maintaining the technical shop area and equipment; storing unused materials; providing general support of the overall production quality of the Sunset Playhouse; and assisting in providing general maintenance of the facility. Duties will be performed utilizing as many Sunset volunteers as possible, but as budgetary allocations permit or, if necessary, with paid guest designers and technical assistants. The Resident Designer/Technical Director will attend staff meetings.

Qualifications:

  • BA in Technical Theater with emphasis on design and construction
  • Creative ability to design production sets and solid set construction and painting skills to complete sets
  • Ability to program light and sound board for productions
  • Working knowledge of Google calendar, Google email, Google docs, and CAD design programs

  • Multi-taskerwith strong organizational skills
  • Ability to adhere to schedules and meet all production deadlines
  • Flexible schedule: night and weekend availability
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and climb ladders.

  • Ability to work with guest directors and designers
  • Respectful and courteous

About The Sunset Playhouse:

Sunset Playhouse was established in 1960 as Southeastern Wisconsin’s premiere community theater. The Playhouse has evolved since those early days into a community arts complex presenting a mix of community theater and professional theater/music events. Additionally, the Playhouse is an important player in theater arts education through its School for The Arts and bug in a rug Children’s Theater Series. The Playhouse produces approximately 20 live productions each season, as well as a number of special concerts and fundraising events.
