Stage Combat: Dueling Arts International

Some of the greatest climactic moments in theater are centered on violence.  In order to safely perform these moments, actors must train under a fight director.  These series of classes focus on teaching techniques for creating the illusion of violence in a theatrical setting.  They emphasize physical awareness, dynamic acting choices, fitness, and partnering.  There will be the opportunity to test for Level 1 Certification for the class weapon through Dueling Arts International.

Rapier and Dagger – In the early 16th century as the popularity of dueling increased and the efficiency of large heavy armors decreased, an off handed weapon began to be employed for defense; the dagger being the most popular for its ease of carry and offensive capabilities.  Combatants will be challenged to integrate both sides of their bodies in dynamic choreography where they will be able to attack and defend at the same time. Weapons will be provided.

knife class

STAGE COMBAT CLASS – KNIFE BASICS hosted by the Bard & Bourbon Theatre Company

A 5-week Monday night workshop in theatrical knife fighting technique taught by Christopher Elst, Certified Teacher with the Society of American Fight Directors (SAFD) and Associate Instructor with Dueling Arts International (DAI).

Knife fights appear frequently onstage and in film and combine close weapons work with unarmed technique. This workshop will provide the foundational skills you need, along with a focus on safety, partnering, and storytelling. Plus it’s some of the most fun you can have while sober.

Completing this workshop will provide 15 hours toward Certification in Knife offered by The Society of American Fight Directors. If enough participants are interested in completing their certification, we will work with Chris to schedule a second 15 hour workshop later this year.

Classes are Mondays from 6:30-9:30, April 11, 18, 25, May 2, and 9 at Summerfield United Methodist Church, 728 E. Juneau Ave. Milwaukee, WI 53202

Cost is only $80, due by the start of the first class. Class size is limited so sign up early!
