VOICES FOUND REPERTORY PRESENTS THEATRE GAMES AND TWELFTH NIGHT

Season 1 finishes with a world-premiere thriller and Shakespeare’s classic comedy

Theatre Games: May 3-7, 2017 | Twelfth Night: May 10-14, 2017

MILWAUKEE, WI – Voices Found Repertory concludes its inaugural season with “twin” productions at the Arcade Theatre: the world premiere of Theatre Games, a thriller with a Shakespearean flair, and the Bard’s beloved gender-bending comedy, Twelfth Night. Together, these shows form an oddly complementary pair that examines gender, family, secrecy, deception, and relationships.

Theatre Games is a fast-paced psychodrama by emerging Midwestern playwright Pharyne Stephney that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats. When five Shakespeare characters find themselves stranded in an abandoned theatre with a script, a princess, and a guy named Bill, they must piece together the convoluted machinations of their boss before it’s too late. But when everyone’s script is a secret, who’s to say what’s written and what’s improvised? Reminiscent of Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, this never-before-seen play directed by Jake Russell Thompson takes us into an unraveling world of crime, secrets, and psychopathy.

Twelfth Night counteracts the darkness of Theatre Games with the Bard’s signature heart and wit in one of his most pro-LGBTQ+ works. A diverse ensemble presents this comedy of music, poetry, and unrequited love – the basis for the hit film She’s the Man – with all the color and energy of a 1980s music video. Directed by Nick Hurtgen and Shanna Theiste, Shakespeare’s hilarious adventure into love, gender, and identity in Illyria is the breath of fresh air we need this spring. Our May 12 show is a late-nite “unrated” version that begins at 9pm. Come for the laughs, stay for the love.

Patrons can purchase “twin ticket” sets for both shows at a discounted price.

TRIGGER WARNING

ABOUT

The play centers on the twins Viola and Sebastian, who are separated in a shipwreck.  The play’s action focuses on the Countess Olivia falling in love with Viola (who is disguised as a boy), Sebastian in turn falling in love with Olivia, Duke Orsino’s attempts to woo Olivia,

and Viola (disguised as a boy) falling in love with Duke Orsino.  A cornucopia of mistaken identities, tomfoolery, and the woes of love make this arguably Shakespeare’s best and most popular comedy.

Mark Rylance as Olivia (right) and Samuel Barnett as Viola in Twelfth Night. The Broadway production, which first played at London’s Globe Theatre, is done in the Elizabethan tradition, with an all-male cast.

This season, New York audiences have seen wildly different interpretations of Shakespeare plays. They’ve seen the Romeo of Orlando Bloom make his first entrance on a motorcycle; they’ve seen a production of Julius Caesar set in a women’s prison.

Now the London-based company from Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre has landed on Broadway with what seems like the most radical concept of them all: plays staged in a style Shakespeare would’ve recognized, with all-male casts, period costumes and live music.

Optimist Theatre is Seeking…

Guess what happens when you present a wonderful event like free Shakespeare in the Park? People go. Happy people. People who are anticipating a lovely time.

That lovely time includes a variety of points of contact which take some work to do well. It’s fun work, but needs to be done. To that end, Optimist Theatre is seeking a Merchandise Director and a Food and Beverage Director.

This is a start-up opportunity, so if you’re a bootstrapper like all the other highly motivated people who are involved with free Shakespeare in the Park, you should consider contacting us.   These are independent contractor positions.
